Conventional teaching is that Type 2 diabetes is an irreversible process, and that the patient can only get worse.

However in the study, some 11 patients with Type 2 diabetes were put on an extreme diet of only 600 calories, composing liquid diet drinks and non-starchy vegetables.

When compared with a control group of non-diabetic persons and steadily monitored over 8 weeks, with measurements of fasting blood sugar, fat levels in the pancreas and insulin production. It was noted that the fasting blood sugar came down to normal, and the fat level in the pancreas came down to normal from an elevated level, allowing normal production of insulin.

The subjects were returned to a normal diet with advice about healthy eating. After 3 months of just diet control alone, 7 of the 11 remained non-diabetic.
