‘D’ for Diabetes
Diabetes is expected to skyrocket in the coming decades. Experts warn many of today’s babies and children are going to feel its impact when they’re adults.
In a new study, researchers looked at whether low vitamin D may raise kids’ risk of diabetes. They included 498 kids, most of whom were obese. The children provided blood samples and answered questions about their diet.
Obese kids who had less vitamin D had more severe insulin resistance. This is a problem that sets the stage for diabetes. In these kids, skipping breakfast and drinking more sodas and juice were linked to lower vitamin D levels.
Experts don’t know yet if giving kids vitamin D can treat insulin resistance. In the meantime, though, you can help protect your kids by:
* Making sure they eat a nutritious breakfast so they feel less need to overeat later in the day. Fortified milk, yogurt, and whole-grain cereals contain vitamin D.
* And urging them to stay physically active. Playing outdoors can help them burn calories while they meet their vitamin D needs, since sunlight boosts our vitamin D.
